General Information Driffield Show 2008
I am sure that previous exhibitors will be delighted to know that they should now be able to join us with the movement of the current protection zone for Blue Tongue. Our recently appointed livestock secretary, Richard Jackson, is introducing new sections for both sheep and cattle alongside the old favourites.
The much anticipated Royal Horse Artillery will perform twice during the Show with a gun carriage and team of six horses thundering through the main ring! They will also demonstrate pistol and sabre work and of course firing the cannon.
We are pleased to welcome Holderness Hunt who is kindly bringing their beautiful, well behaved hounds which are always popular with youngsters on the day - particularly as the odd one disappears off into the crowd in search of an abandoned burger or two!
Our Activity Arena boasts many entertaining events of its own such as Terrier Dog Racing, The White Rose Polo Club demonstration games, gun dog displays and all terrain bikes! We also hope that the Fire Brigade will be attending to show how the powerful and awesome ‘jaws of life’ can truly save lives in car accidents. We will not be expecting visitors to donate their cars for this demonstration unless they fail to park in the designated areas!
The Show signifies the culmination of ‘The Year of Food and Farming’ in our region. I am sure that many are looking forward to the judging of the Young Grower’s Competition in which over thirty four schools from across the East Riding and inner city Hull have participated. Many large companies and organisations to which we are very grateful such as Birds Eye Peas, Waitrose and Bishop Burton College to name but a few have worked hard to bring the competition together.
Costello’s of Driffield and locally renowned pizzeria Marco Polo’s will be leading demonstrations in the ‘Wheat to Bread’ section. This is a hands on opportunity for both children and adults to experience some mouth watering artisan breads from our very own local baker and pizza chef – really the ‘best thing since sliced bread!’ For those interested in how the whole process begins, The One Horse Mill will showcase traditional methods of producing flour.
For those desperate to shop, shop, shop!
Over four hundred stands with everything from combine harvesters to wellington boots will be present on the day. This year we are placing strong emphasis on both local food and new rural businesses. This has been made possible due to the Regional Food Group, Farmers Market Hall, cookery demonstrations and our very own Enterprise Village . The 2008 Show features our largest ever marquees for Horticultural, Handicrafts and Fur and Feather due to ever expanding entries. We are thrilled to welcome as many participants as we can.
Throughout the Show there are many promotional opportunities available. For further information, please contact David Tite, Society Director to discuss your requirements.
Enterprise Village Training and Society Seminars
As in previous years the Society is offering training events for both new rural businesses and our members. During May and June we have four training sessions aimed at improving the way you do business. These sessions are free and all are welcome. Please contact the showground office for more details or to reserve your place.
