Enterprising Farmers Shortlisted for Driffield Show Award
Earlier today details of the shortlisted entrants were announced for the first ever George F. White Farm Diversification Award in association with the Driffield Agricultural Society. They represent a diverse range of businesses all with the same goal of preserving their family farms and contributing to the rural economy of the East Riding.

The aim of the award sponsored by rural specialists George F. White, who have just opened a new branch in Shiptonthorpe, is to highlight the important role these diversification projects play in supporting the rural community. This award is specifically aimed at farmers with a new enterprise established by an existing farm business anywhere in the East Riding of Yorkshire within the last five years.

The judges Mr Jim Bloom representing The Driffield Agricultural Society, Mr Chris Oxtoby Secretary of East Riding Young Farmers, Mr Dan Jackson Chairman East Riding Young Farmers and Mr Louis Fell Partner of George F. White will visit all those shortlisted within the next two weeks and the winner will be presented with their trophy and £500 prize at the Driffield Show on Wednesday 21st July.

The shortlisted businesses are: The Jackson Family of Carnaby House Farm near Bridlington have been manufacturing their Gold from the Wold Rapeseed Oil, East Yorkshire’s very own answer to olive oil since 2007. The oil is cold pressed from their own crops and 30,000 bottles a year are sold at farmers markets and fine food shops throughout the region.

Challenger Agri (UK) Ltd was founded in 2009 by farmer Tom Croft who has used his knowledge of agriculture to manufacture a wide range of specialist machinery. From their site at North End Farm in Ottringham near Hull, they offer a full service from initial prototypes through to final build. Having successfully launched several prototypes including the Virion Flatlift, they are now concentrating on new designs.

Mount Pleasant Farm Brigham near Driffield a 220 acre arable and dairy farm is also combining engineering and agriculture. C & M Construction (UK) Ltd was launched by Chris Foreman earlier this year. This new business provides civil engineering, construction and groundwork services to small local businesses in particular those involved in farming.

The judges will be specifically looking for an innovative forward looking business, that can show economic viability and profitably. It must show that it contributes to the rural economy of East Riding and be seen as a role model to other farming enterprises.

Commenting on the shortlisted entries Louis Fell said: “We have a diverse range of entries and are looking forward to meeting those that have been shortlisted. The future of farming is all about sustainability and all of these enterprises are adding real value to their core businesses. Through this award we want to highlight progressive farm based businesses to encourage more farmers in East Riding to consider these types of schemes to diversify their income streams and spread their risks.”

George F. White, are one of the largest firms of independent Chartered Surveyors in the North of England with offices in Bedale and Shiptonthorpe in Yorkshire.
